Can I polish wrought iron for in-door use with stove polish or black shoe polish? I don't want to paint...

you could use polish but it would not look as nice and it wouldnt protect the iron as well. your best option is to paint it.

I like the other answers better, but if you do use shoe polish etc, make sure it isn't combustable.
Reply:If you are going to use it in a high temperature location for years to come I would have it taken to a shop that could anodize the surface to the color you would prefer (costly). A cheaper way would to take gun bluing chemicals and treat the surface, you could allow it to a flat or shiny finish.
Reply:Wrought iron should be a flat finish, so I would use a product meant to clean it not polish it. Make sure to rub to a smooth, dry finish as residue can build up.
Reply:every year I repaint the wrought iron in my fireplace set and andirons with a high heat grill and fireplace paint. I apply it with a small soaked rag. The black liquid is very thin like paint thinner yet leaves an excellent finish that wears well and cleans and buffs nicely.
